The prelaunch special prices for Windows 7 Home Premuim E (£45) and Professional E (£90) have caused many vendors to have a run on stock. Amazon now has none at the promotional price and has rverted to selling copies at the full launch price, as has Play.com. Yet if you shop araound you can still find some copies at promotional prices. Windows 7 pre-release stock selling out fast

If you plan on picking up Windows 7 for a ‘”steal” - £45 for the HE and £90 for the Pro edition, you’d better move fast. Many retailers – including Amazon and Ebuyer – appeared to have sold out already. At time of writing, Currys, PC World and Play.com appeared to have some stock left. Try checking some of these out if you get no joy at Amazon.

Pre-order Windows 7 for as little as £44.97

Microsoft has opened up pre-orders for retail copies of Windows 7. From today(15th July) until 9th August you’ll be able to pre-order a copy of Windows 7 E for significantly less than it will go on sale in October – under £45 if you order through Amazon.

It’s worth noting that the European release of Windows 7 (Windows 7 E) won’t come with Internet Explorer installed. As a result you’ll need to make sure you have an installation copy of your favourite browser stored somewhere safe – on CD or flash drive for example – so you can browse the web after installing Windows 7. The lack of Internet Explorer in Windows 7 also means you won’t be able to upgrade to Windows 7 over the top of your existing Windows XP or Vista installation – you’ll need to perform a fresh install.

If you run your laptop for extended periods of time, you might notice it getting uncomfortably warm. Mobile processors can run hotter than their desktop counterparts, but you’ll extend their lifespan by cooling them. If you have a smaller laptop, you can get a more modest dimensioned cooler like this one from Belkin in PC World, which is going at a web exclusive price of £13.69. Free Windows 7 Upgrades

There's no need to put off getting a new PC or laptop just because Windows 7 is around the corner. Novatech is offering free upgrades to Windows 7 for any computer bought now preloaded with Windows Vista. You can upgrade to Windows 7 for free as soon as it's released on 22nd October 2009 and the free upgrade voucher is good until 28th February 2010. For more details, click here.

Now all you need to do is find a good deal to make use of the offer. Ebuyer has an excellent laptop deal on the go. It's an Acer Extensa 5620Z Intel Core Duo T2330 listed at £279.98 inc vat. This includes an Intel Core Duo T2330 processor 1GB RAM, 120GB hard disk a 15.4 inch screen and a DVD±RW. It comes with Vista Home Premium preinstalled and delivery is free. It makes me wish we had an affiliate relationship with eBuyer as these are bound to be popular.

Meanwhile Novatech has an excellent HP all-in one printer deal. The HP Deskjet F418 0 All-in-One* Printer, Scanner and Copier is going for just £35.25 inc vat. Free delivery starts on orders over £50, so you may want to top up with ink cartridges* and photo paper* while you're about it.

Ebuyer has a Lacie 320GB External Hard Drive at £39.99. It's a great price, but comes in at below their cut off for free delivery, which is £49.99, so you may want to supplement the order so that you qualify.

Meanwhile Novatech has a stunning upgrade deal if you're looking for a top performer. Its MBB-P5N945 motherboard bundle* is £389.99 with free delivery available. For this you get an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 processor 2048MB 800Mhz DDR2 RAM, Heatsink And Fan, NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI graphics, and the nVidia P5N ATX Motherboard itself. As with all Novatech bundles, it's pre-assembled and tested so you know the components work.

On the laptop front, there's still the Axes Pro laptop* which starts at £249.99 with no operating system installed. Remember that there are free operating systems about like Ubuntu, which you can download or get sent free in the post. Great Laptop Deal

EuroPCs has a stock of 76 refurbished Dell Inspiron 1520* laptops going at £279 ex VAT. It works out at £327.83 including VAT, but the spec is impressive and it includes Vista Home Premium along with a Pentium Dual Core T2330 1.6GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 80GB SATA HDD and a DVDRW drive. It also includes wireless networking and a built in card reader. Definitely worth a look.

Routers and clearance laptops

Ebuyer has a great deal on a Dynamode Wireless ADSL2+ Router, selling for just £14.99. When you add on delivery, it comes in at just under £20. This deal is so good it's being tipped by the Money Saving Expert site, so expect the stock to go quickly.

Anyone on the lookout for cheap laptops or well specced ones going at bargain prices should check out Novatech's clearance sale*. There's a wide range available on a first come, first served basis. The bargain basement deal has to be the Apollo 420 Pro*, which had 1GB RAM and 80 gig hard drive and DVD rewriter for just £233.82. They won't hang around for long though, so be quick. Some of Novatech's laptops come without an operating system installed, enabling you to save more money, especially if you opt to install the free Ubuntu, which you can get as a download or request a free CD in the post.

Cheap Upgrades

Novatech is offering a number of motherboard bundles* at knock down prices. These provide the main guts of a computer that have already been assembled and tested so they're ready to just drop into your existing case, reusing your hard drive and any CD/DVD drives you have. They even have an installation guide to download on their site, but there's really not much to it.

This is a great option if you're looking to upgrade and have limited funds or want to do the green thing and reuse what components you can. The bundles start at £105 for an Intel Dual Core E2180 processor bundle* with 1GB RAM, but there's a full range right up to quad core gaming bundles that have the most cutting edge components. If you go for one of these, you can effectively get a £1000 PC for under £400 and all you have to do is plug in some cables and tighten a few screws.

HP 530 Laptop

Ebuyer has announced an excellent laptop deal. It's selling the HP 530 Laptop with Intel Celeron M 520 processor, 1GB RAM, 120GB hard drive, 15.4" widescreen, a DVD±RW drive, wireless networking and Vista Home Basic. You get all this for just £269.97 with free delivery. We don't have an affiliate relationship with Ebuyer, but it's currently the best laptop deal available including Windows.

If you don't need a copy of Windows because you've got a spare or are happy to dabble in the world of Linux, you can get a cheaper laptop at Novatech. The Axes pro* is available for £249.99 with free delivery. It comes with an Intel M530 Celeron and a very similar spec to the Ebuyer offering, although it doesn't carry the HP brand. Linux is not as scary as it once was and Ubuntu is a very easy distribution to install and use. You can get it absolutely free from www.ubuntu.com. SVP Communications' weekly 24 hour sale is again featuring the Toshiba DVR17 DVD/VHS Combi Recorder* for £89.99 until noon Thursday 5th June. It's a great deal as you can usually expect to pay around £150 for a new combination recorder like this.They're ideal for converting VHS tapes to DVDs without all the hassle that video capture on a PC entails. The normal price for this item is £179.

Novatech is still offering the Axes Pro 15.4" screen laptop* for £249.99. It's an impressive spec for such a low price tag, coming with an Intel Celeron M530 processor, 1GB DDR2 RAM 120Gb SATA HDD and a DVDRW drive. There's no operating system installed and getting Windows put on it will cost more, but you can always use Ubuntu, which is completely free. Delivery is free for orders over £50.

If you want a laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium preinstalled, then you're better off going to PC World. It has the Ei System 1201 Laptop* for £299.99 with free delivery. Along with Vista, this has an Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor T2370, 1 GB Memory and a 120 GB Hard Drive and a DVD SuperMulti Drive.

If you get it without Windows installed, the price is just £249.99 and you can always install the free Ubuntu operating system. If you'd rather have Windows preinstalled, the laptop costs £299.99. New laptop for under £250

The bank holiday weekend offers keep rolling in an here's a little gem from Novatech. They've cut prices for the weekend including this full sized laptop for £249.99 inc VAT*. I've only seen this kind of price on ultra mobiles like the EeePC, but this has a 15.4" screen, includes an Intel Celeron M530 with 1GB RAM and 120GB SATA hard drive as well as a DVD rewriter. They've achieved the low cost partly by not including Windows, but it will run Ubuntu just fine and you can download that for free. If you'd rather have Windows XP installed, that pushes the price up to £299.99, or to have Vista Home Premium, you're looking at a cost of £339.00, but if you're happy to go open source, it's a fantastic bargain.

Another offer that caught my eye is a DivX DVD player from Ebuyer. It's £19.99 and yet still supports Dolby digital and 5.1 surround if you have the kit to amplify it. PC World* has a few interesting pickings available too. There's the Toshiba L350-10L* laptop for £399.00, which is pretty good value. If you're looking for something with a bit more poke and have a larger budget try the HP DV9890 Laptop*, which offers stunning performance but will burn £1,199.99 from your pocket. They've also got a number of refurbished laptops available if you're looking for a bargain. These include the PHILIPS 12NB5800* for £459.99, the
ADVENT 8212* for £369.99 and he girly pink ADVENT KC500-P*, which is selling for just £279.99.

In components, Novatech* has a great deal on PCI express graphics cards. It's offering its Novatech GeForce 9600GT* for just £84.99. It's SLI ready and has 512MB GDDR3 memory and a choice of DVI output or TV out. Stock levels are looking very good at the moment, but it's likely to be popular.

Wednesday Pickings

SVP Communications is having another "Wild Wednesday" 24 hour sale running from noon today (21st May). That actually makes it "Wild Wednesday and part of Thursday" but I guess that's not such a snappy title. There are a few good deals up for grabs though. To see the lot click here*.

Notable inclusions are the Toshiba DVR17 DVD/VHS Combi Recorder*, mentioned on the main blog and they're also selling 22" HD ready TVs both with* and without* digital tuners. The analogue version is slightly more expensive at £209.99 compared to the digital version at £189.99. Be aware if you're considering these sets that some commentators believe that you can't really appreciate HD TV on sets smaller than 32", although they may well be people trying to flog you a bigger telly.

Another notable, but much cheaper deal is this CD/DVD carry case* which holds 240 discs. It costs £1.99 in the sale and is a great way to tidy up the collection of drinks coasters that inevitably collect around most PCs.

Spring into Summer?

PC World has been celebrating the good weather that much of the UK enjoyed last week with an optimistic set of promotions labelled Summer Deals. These include a dirt cheap (by Apple standards) White 2.4Ghz MacBook* at £829.00. They've also go some summer blue EeePCs* in costing £249.99 for the 4GB version. If you're out and about and need navigational aid, they've got the TomTom One* at just £109.99. For entertainment on the road there's the tiny iPod Shuffle*, which is a snip at £32.00 and to preserve the memories of any trip away, they're offering a Fujifilm FinePix F47fd* 9 Mega Pixel Digital Camera for £99.00, a saving of over £100.

Elsewhere, if you'd like to free your laptop from the relative confines of your wireless network or the few areas where hotspots exist, why not treat yourself to 3GB mobile broadband*? Vodafone is now offering it at half price for £15 per month. You won't need to be chained to your desk this summer.

Backup deals

We're often banging on about backup and how important it is to have copies of your most valuable data in several places, but where can you put it? This weekend Novatech is offerring limited stock deals on a number of external hard drives, which are just the ticket for a quick and convenient local backup. For example this 500GB Western Digital USB 2.0 external drive is just £77.88, but at the time of writing there are only 17 in stock, so grab them while you can. If you need more space there's the 750GB version that includes USB 2.0 and Firewire interfaces at £116.33, but there's only 11 of them. If huge is never big enough, there's also the massive 1.5TB version that doubles as network attached storage, so you can use it on any PC connected to your network. It costs £193.88 and there are 19 of them up for grabs. If you prefer carrying data around with you there's always the pocket/handbag sized pink USB powered passport drive offerring 250GB portable storage for £55.08. These are selling like hot cakes with only one left when we last checked!

If pastel colours are your thing, PC World now has Eee PCs in stock in a tasteful powder blue. They cost £249.99. They've also got the breathtakingly tiny iPod Shuffle available at just £32. Staying with things Apple, PC World also has a white 2.4GHz MacBook going for £829.00.

Gadgets Galore

The Nintendo DS and DS lite are notable as portable gaming devices not just because they provide puzzles and games that appeal to adults, but they're also quite expandable. The M3 DS Real is a slot 1 card that you can use to expand a DS to copy game files and multimedia files to a high capacity Micro SD memory card. Eshop Megastore stocks the MS Real Rumble Pack including a 1GB Micro SD card for £26.99.

Other gadgets available include a solar powered charger for mobile phones, iPods and other portable devices. The PowerMonkey Explorer costs £49.99 and could help you make your gadgets run on renewable energy. You can even run a flat phone directly from the sun. A cheaper alternative is to trickle charge from the sun. The Universal Solar Charger will charge up in around 10 hours of sunlight and then you can use it to provide power via its USB socket to a range of devices. It costs just £15.99.

MacBook Air

Technology is one area where smaller is generally regarded as better in marked contrast to what many spam messages try to preach. Nowhere is the competition to be smaller and lighter more intense than in the world of laptops. Earlier this year Apple launched the MacBook Air, a notebook so small that it fits inside an envelope, albeit quite a big one. The wow factor comes with its thinness, but to achieve that Apple had to ditch many components that have traditionally been associated with laptops. There's no ethernet port for starters. The computer relies on wireless networking. That's no biggie if your wireless network's up and running happily, but it could be a headache if all's not well with local wifi. It also lacks an optical drive, but to be fair, so does the hugely popular Asus Eee PC. However it has no memory card slot either and only one USB port. The Eee PC has a SD slot and three USB ports.

Apple has come up with ways to get around the lack of a DVD drive; the MacBook Air can use one from another Mac attached to your network, but really this is one for Apple enthusiasts. If you don't have to have a Mac there are better options around, although they may not be as sexy or sleek. If breathtaking design is your thing, the MacBook Air will make you very happy indeed. You can get it for £1199 from PC World or £1197.15 from Laptops Direct. The more thrifty amongst us might be more tempted by the admittedly lower specced EeePC, which starts at £219.97 from Laptops Direct.

Diddy Laptops

If there's one PC that's really created a buzz, it's the Asus EeePC. This ultra portable laptop is in short supply, but there are some vendors atill with stock. MicroDirect has both white and black 7" models in stock for just £249.74. Dabs.com has some stock of the white 7" model at £222.97. The much sought 9" model is sold out at Micro Direct, but Laptops Direct is expecting a new delivery within days. They list it at £329.97. Dabs is expecting some more 9" Eees within the week. The original Eee PC came with Linux installed, which helped to keep the price down, but there are now Windows XP versions available.

If you'd just like a cheap laptop and don't mind too much about size, there are plenty of sub £300 deals about. Dabs has a Acer AS5315 for £299.98, which includes Vista Home Basic and has a Celeron M processor, 1GB RAM, an 80GB hard drive and a DVD rewriter. If you can do without the OS installed, check out Novatech . Its Axes Pro range starts at just £289.00 and for that you get a Celeron M processor, 1GB RAM and a whopping 120Gb SATA HDD along with a DVDRW drive. They can provide you one including Windows for for £329.00. Dell also has a sub £300 laptop in its Inspiron 1525, which is worth a look. There are several notebooks in this price bracket at PC World. Check out the Ei System 4315, or the Acer 5315. They also have the Advent KC500 Kids Laptop which comes in a range of bright colours, including pink red or blue.

24 Hour Sale

We've just received news of a 24 hour sale at SVP communications. Starting 12 noon today and ending at the same time tomorrow, there are some very good prices on peripherals and consumables. These include a Sumvision Akita III LCD photo frame which displays photos and plays movies. The normal price is £59.99 but in the 24 hour sale it's knocked down to £33.99. There's a fantastic deal on a Maxell webcam with headset. Normally it costs £17.99, but in the sale it's just £3.99.
